Data sources and licences
Make the Train combines information from the organisations below. Their data is used under their licences and terms, and none of them endorses Make the Train or its estimates.
Rail and stations
- Station information: National Rail
- Station names and codes come from the National Rail Knowledgebase Stations feed, published by the Rail Delivery Group on the Rail Data Marketplace. Data: NationalRail (Train Information Services Ltd). We keep only the stations we can plan journeys to and show a few names in a clearer form (for example Edinburgh Waverley). The list covers Great Britain, not Northern Ireland.
- Station locations: NaPTAN, Department for Transport, and National Rail
- Most station locations come from NaPTAN, the Department for Transport’s public transport stops data. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Five stations that NaPTAN still shows on an old or planned site (Bromsgrove, Hairmyres, Headbolt Lane, Newcourt and Rochester) use the National Rail location. Data: NationalRail (Train Information Services Ltd).
- Train times
- Live timetable data from railinfo.uk, credited beside each journey result. A result that uses any other source credits it there too.
- Timetable reference
- Which stations we check for a destination, and some timetable details, come from the national rail timetable published by Network Rail (source: Network Rail). Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
- Disruption information
- National Rail / Rail Delivery Group.

Northern Ireland (BT) postcodes are not looked up, because their commercial use needs a separate Land & Property Services licence. See the Postcodes.io data licences.

- Found by straight-line distance from the place or postcode: at most eight, within 15 miles. They are not walking routes, and we never infer your travel time from them.
